The urge to explore is intertwined with the human propensity to exploit and develop any new environment. Beyond the debris of dystopia, there is the alchemical promise of ‘uncharted territory’, imbued with the mythically optimistic potential of the unknown, new world (wherever that might be). The video diptych Frontier and Coast explores the interstice between representation and concept, form and formlessness; here, the volcanically-active boreal terrain of Iceland provides waterscapes at their extremes of vapor and ice. Their otherworldliness is leveraged to evoke exoplanetary journeys, promoting an atmosphere where the viewer is left to ask where and when these uninhabited spaces are situated.
